The very first thought I had when waking up this morning was to hear the words “Precision Steering” in my spirit.  Well, it didn’t surprise me how the LORD was already guiding my thoughts to focus on today’s article, so here we go. As some car enthusiasts say, “Get in, sit down, fasten your seat belt and hang on tight, we’re going for a ride”.

What exactly is “precision steering”?  Well, let’s see what that is, and what it is not.  Have you ever driven a car that has worn out parts in its steering?  I have; and it isn’t any fun.  When going down the road, even though you have the will to drive a straight line down the highway, every rut and groove, every bump or uneven place in the road causes your car to wander around, and it keeps you busy correcting the steering.  That term is called “bump steer”, and it literally wears you out if you’re making a long trip.  Over many miles our motor home got to where it wanted to wander all over the road, especially if there was any wind, and when a truck would pass, it would get scary, and if the road was bad, it was a real “white knuckles” experience.  Nobody likes that kind of ride.

Loose steering doesn’t usually happen overnight, as it’s a process of a bunch parts all gradually wearing out at the same, and you really don’t notice it until it gets really bad, then one day maybe you hit a bump and the steering wheel starts shaking, maybe just a little.  And the more you drive it, the looser it gets until the shaking becomes bad.  It’s amazing though, how we will ignore the symptoms and just keep on driving, though the journeys become more and  more unpleasant, until one day something breaks and you find yourself out of control, and maybe even in a wreck.  And by that time, it isn’t just replacing a loose part or parts, it can also be replacing your wrecked car or spending time in the hospital recovering from injuries. What could have been fixed inexpensively in the beginning has now become a financial disaster, but that’s what happens when you put stuff off.  I’ve often heard the expression, “Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow.”  That’s the worst advice EVER!

What does this have to do with your life?  Everything…I’ll tell you why.  After fixing the steering on our motor home, it became a whole new experience.  It was easy to keep it on course, even when driving on bad roads, and it no longer suffered from “bump steer”, and wind didn’t blow me all over the road, so it was much more pleasant to drive.  What’s more, it no longer wore me out from wrestling it all over the road.  Of course, I’m sure you’ve never agonized over making a decision, or what to do or where to go, right?  Aha, I found the right person, thank you, Jesus!

You see, the LORD wants to guide you into the life He has planned for you, and it’s a good one.  And of course, the devil has his plan for you too, which is waste, ruin, and destructions.  And even if your “steering” is tight, the devil will make sure your road is a real bumpy and rutted one which will sooner or later wear you out until you’re struggling to even keep on the road.  I know, been there, done that.  You know, we often focus on the destination, but the trip is what wears us out, so by the time we get where we’re going, we are too worn out to enjoy it.  And if you’ve noticed lately, everything going on around us tries to make life a “white knuckle” event, whether it’s going to work, or going to the store, or trying to decide how to make the paycheck stretch another day.  Maybe it’s knowing whether to take another job somewhere else, or moving the family to a new location.  It’s like trying to steer your sailboat in a hurricane, you know you want to get there, but you just don’t know it’s going to turn out.  You need “precision steering”.  You need the Holy Spirit to guide your every move.

Back years ago people sometimes traveled by bus, and there was a slogan, “Get on the bus, and leave the driving to us.”   You bought your ticket to your destination, got on the bus and sat back and relaxed and let the driver safely take you there.  There were usually several stops along the way to take on or let off passengers, and in the meantime, you could enjoy the scenery. Sometimes I would ride the bus and after several stops would wonder, “Are we ever gonna get there?”  But the driver knew exactly where he was going, even though I didn’t, and in due time we arrived right on time.  Well, the point is, it wasn’t up to me to drive, only to enjoy the ride.  In fact, it cost as much to worry and fret and stew as it did to relax and enjoy the trip, do you know what I mean?

The Bible tells us in Psalm 32:8-11 some of the best advice we could ever hear:
Psa 32:8  I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
Psa 32:9  Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
Psa 32:10  Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.
Psa 32:11  Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

The Bible doesn’t tell us to choose our way and ask God to bless it.  It says to let HIM choose our way and guide us into it.  I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather let God do the “driving”, because He knows the way to get me to His house.  I don’t even know where it is, much less how to get there.  And as we navigate life’s road, the devil passes us and goes ahead and has his crew unload potholes, detours,  and dead ends in our path, so that we can’t find our own way, even if we try.  But the Holy Spirit will guide us IF we let Him.  Notice I said “IF”, because if you really want to do the steering, God will let you, only you most likely won’t end up where you want to be.  It’s kind of like being in New York and you want to go to California: and of course you know the way, so off you go.  One day you see a sign, “Orlando 30 miles”, and you realize somehow you ended up in Florida.  How can that be?  Well, it’s your fault, you’re driving.  Don’t blame God for your refusing to follow the roadmap.

Sometimes we are stubborn and we don’t want any advice from anyone.  We are the captain of our own ship and if you don’t like it, tough.  Well, God made this universe and everything in it, and He knows what works and what doesn’t, and if we are smart, we will let Him chart the course.  Those verses above tell it like it is, we can have it OUR way, or we can have it GOD’S way, but many are the sorrows we will face doing it our way.  I like to say it like this:  you can go to Burger King and get a hamburger any way you like it, and if you like the hamburger on the outside and the bun in the middle, that’s ok with Burger King.  They don’t care, they just want your money, and every way is the right way as far as they are concerned.  But it isn’t like that when dealing with God;  He offers the hamburger only one way, HIS WAY, but don’t worry, you’re gonna love it, because He does it up right.

Just look around, society is in a real mess today, people don’t know right from wrong, and in fact our government is now saying what God says is an abomination to Him is now ”right”, and is the law of our land.  How messed up can it get?  How did everything get so off course?  Loose steering, plain and simple, and replacing worn out parts with more worn out parts, until they can’t even keep it on the road anymore. God warned us it would happen if we turned from His way, and we did, and it did.  Don’t we ever learn?  Well, we can, but WILL we before it results in our wrecking our lives and those of others?  We can’t make others fix their “steering”, but we can sure get OUR steering fixed so we know how to navigate.  Jesus will repair your “steering” system if you will invite Him to, and He doesn’t charge for it, either.  You don’t need to send your “best offering” to some TV evangelist.  Just obey the Holy Spirit from now on.

Getting back to the “Precision Steering”, God will never lead you on a detour or dead end.  He will steer you precisely the way you need to go, because He has already been there, done that, and knows the way.  So why not sit back and relax, let God replace those worn out, battle weary steering parts in YOUR life, let Him show you how enjoyable your trip through life can be by letting Him guide you.  He isn’t lost, you know.  You may think you know the way, but you really don’t, because you’ve never been this way before.  He has.  Take my word for it, life is a lot more enjoyable even when driving over potholes and bad roads, when you have Precision Steering!
